Every right implies a responsibility ~ JDR

  • John Davison Rockefeller, Sr. was an American business magnate and philanthropist. His name is forever linked with the Standard Oil Company, the pioneer enterprise that dominated the oil industry and was the first great U.S. business trust. Rockefeller was probably the first magnate in the petroleum industry, and along with other key contemporary industrialists such as Andrew Carnegie, defined the structure of modern philanthropy. In 1870, he co-founded Standard Oil Company and actively ran it until he officially retired in 1897.
  • Notable around JDR's birthdaySlaves aboard the Amistad rebel and capture the ship. And noteworth around the date of his death: In California, the Golden Gate Bridge opens to pedestrian traffic, creating a vital link between San Francisco and Marin County. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt pushes a button in Washington, D.C., signaling the start of vehicle traffic over the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Kykuit, also known as John D. Rockefeller Estate, is a 40-room National Trust house in Westchester County, New York, built by oil tycoon, capitalist and Rockefeller family patriarch John D. Rockefeller. Largely conceived by his son, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and enriched by the art collection of third-generation scion, Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States, Nelson A. Rockefeller, it has been home to four generations of the family.
